ASTM D1785 and ASTM F441 - PVC and CPVC Pipes Schedule 40 & 80

Standard dimensions and weight of PVC - Polyvinyl Chloride - and CPVC - Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride.

pvc pipes

Typical weight and dimensions of industrial PVC and CPVC pipes equal to steel pipes schedule 40 and 80 are indicated in the table below.

  • ASTM D1785 Standard Specification for Poly(Vinyl Chloride) (PVC) Plastic Pipe, Schedules 40, 80, and 120 is manufactured to meet the needs of a broad range of industrial, commercial and residential piping systems. ASTM D1785 covers pipes made for water distribution and irrigation systems.
  • ASTM F441 Standard Specification for Chlorinated Poly(Vinyl Chloride) (CPVC) Plastic Pipe, Schedules 40 and 80

Chlorinated Poly(Vinyl Chloride) (CPVC) pipes are usable for water distribution at elevated temperatures.

PVC - Polyvinyl Chloride

PVC is the strongest and one of the most widely used plastic pipe. PVC has poor resistance to solvents and is used for both pressure and non-pressure applications. PVC is approved for potable water systems.

  • strong and rigid
  • resistant to a variety of acids and bases
  • may be damaged by some solvents and chlorinated hydrocarbons
  • maximum usable temperature 140oF (60oC)
  • usable for water, gas and drainage systems
  • not usable in hot water systems

CPVC - Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride

CPVC is a chemical modification of PVC, with an extra chlorine atom in its structure that extends the service temperature to about 180 - 200°F (82 - 93°C). Sizes and other properties are very similar to PVC.
