AWG - American Wire Gauge vs. Circular Mils
American Wire Gauge (AWG) is a U.S. standard for wire conductor size. The "gauge" is related to the diameter of the wire.
The AWG standard includes copper, aluminum and other wire materials. Typical household copper wiring is AWG number 12 or 14. Telephone wire is usually 22, 24, or 26. The higher the gauge number, the smaller the diameter and the thinner the wire.
The Circular Mil - CM - is a unit of area used especially to denote cross-sectional size of a wire or cable.

AWG to Inches
Diameter in inches can be calculated from AWG as
din = 0.005 92(36 - n)/39 (1)
where
din = diameter (inches)
n = gauge
AWG to mm
Diameter in mm can be calculated from AWG as
dmm = 0.127 92(36 - n)/39 (1b)
where
dmm = diameter (mm)
n = gauge
