Specific acoustic impedance is measure of the ability of a medium to transmit sound waves.

It can be expressed as

Z = P / v

where

Z = acoustic impedance (Pa s/m)

p = sound pressure (Pa)

v = particle velocity (m/s)

ρ = density of medium (kg/m3)

c = velocity of sound (m/s)

The equation express the coupling between the vibrating particles in the medium.
